The Art of Walking and Reflecting; (Notes to self)

Updated: Feb 13

When training to be a therapist, I discovered that self-reflection isn’t just a skill; it’s an art form. While training, we learn about journaling and its cathartic powers, but for me, the real magic happens when I lace up my shoes and head out into the countryside with my dog by my side.

There’s something about walking that unlocks a world of thoughts and feelings.

I’ll be out for a stroll, the breeze gently blowing my hair, and suddenly, I’m deep in thought, reflecting on everything from work to family, to that lingering question of what’s next. It’s like my body is moving, but my mind is dancing in a completely different place. Sometimes, I’ll even record voice notes to capture those fleeting insights, which I call my “notes to self.” It’s my version of journaling, raw, unfiltered, and completely in the moment.

And oh, the gems that drop from the sky! You know those moments when an idea or realisation hits you out of nowhere? It’s as if nature is whispering secrets directly to my soul.

Maybe it’s because when I’m outdoors, I feel more connected to the earth, and in turn, more connected to myself.

I’ve been toying with the idea of sharing some of these “notes to self” as blog posts. I can only imagine how many of you reflect in your own ways. Maybe you find its when your in a hot bubble bath, letting the warmth soak away your worries. Or perhaps you like belting out tunes in the car while contemplating life’s bigger mysteries. And then there are those who might feel like they don’t have time for self-reflection at all. If that’s you, I urge you to reconsider. Even small moments can spark significant insights.

Try carving out just a few minutes each day to check in with yourself. You’d be surprised at what bubbles up to the surface.

So, how do you self-reflect? What are your secret spaces for contemplation? Let’s chat about it, after all, sometimes the best conversations are the ones we have with ourselves.

Wishing you well
